State leadership continues to push taxpayer-funded vouchers that would defund our local Hidalgo County public schools. South Texas rural and urban districts alike stand to lose millions in funding, forcing teacher layoffs and larger class sizes, all to subsidize private academies mostly located in wealthy suburbs.
Texas has the highest number of uninsured residents in the nation, and Hidalgo County specifically suffers from a severe lack of healthcare access. Despite the federal government offering to cover 90% of the cost, our state leaders refuse to expand Medicaid, leaving hard-working South Texans without access to life-saving doctors and preventative care.
Corporate utility monopolies continue to hike rates on everyday families while failing to winterize the Texas electrical grid. Record profits are being funneled to executives while working-class neighborhoods experience rolling blackouts during extreme weather. We demand a reliable grid and an end to price gouging.
